Renew your licence disc online.
Yes — you can renew your vehicle licence disc online in South Africa, without standing in a queue. This guide covers the official NaTIS online portal, the provincial e-services, exactly what you need, and how long delivery takes. Prefer to skip the admin entirely? You can renew on WhatsApp in two minutes.
Can you renew a vehicle licence online in South Africa?
Yes. There are three practical routes, depending on how much admin you want to do yourself:
- The NaTIS online portal — the national government system for online renewals.
- Provincial e-services — some provinces run their own online booking/renewal sites.
- WhatsApp (ChatBack) — the simplest option: no registration, no portal, the disc delivered to you.
Whichever route you choose, you pay the same provincial licence fee. Use the fee calculator to see what yours will be before you start.
Option 1 — The NaTIS online portal
The official national portal is online.natis.gov.za. After registering, you can renew a motor vehicle licence and have the disc delivered. The broad steps are:
- Register an account at online.natis.gov.za with your ID number and email, and verify it.
- Add your vehicle using its registration number and current licence disc number.
- Pay online by card or EFT — including any arrears and penalties if you're late.
- Receive your disc by delivery. Keep your proof of payment while you wait.
Heads-up: the portal requires registration and verification, and availability and delivery times vary by province. If it's down or you'd rather not set up an account, the WhatsApp route below skips all of that.
Option 2 — Provincial e-services
Several provinces have their own online systems for booking or renewing — for example online portals in the Western Cape and Gauteng. Coverage and reliability differ from province to province, and some only offer slot booking rather than full online payment. Check your province's official transport department site, or just find your nearest branch on our post office & branch finder.
Option 3 — Renew on WhatsApp (the easy way)
If you don't want to register on a portal or queue at a branch, ChatBack renews your vehicle licence over WhatsApp:
- Send a message and reply with your registration number, tare weight and expiry date.
- You get a quote including any penalties.
- Pay, and the renewed disc is delivered to you.
What you need to renew online
- Your ID number
- Your vehicle's registration number and current licence disc number
- A delivery address
- A card or EFT to pay the fee (plus arrears/penalties if late)
What does it cost?
Online renewal costs the same as renewing in person — the provincial licence fee, which depends on your province and your vehicle's tare weight. If you're renewing late you'll also pay pro-rata arrears and a 10%-per-month penalty (capped at 100%). See the full breakdown and calculator on the fees page.
How long does delivery take?
It varies by province and courier — anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. While you wait, keep your proof of payment: it's your evidence that the licence has been renewed if your old disc expires before the new one arrives.
Frequently asked
Can I renew my licence disc online if it has already expired?
Usually yes — you'll pay the arrears and penalty as part of the total. If your renewal notice never arrived, also read never received a renewal notice.
Do I still need the ALV form to renew online?
No — the ALV/MVL1 form is for in-person renewal without a notice. Online and WhatsApp renewals don't need you to fill in a form. (If you do need it, here's the ALV form download.)
Is online renewal available in my province?
The NaTIS portal is national, but coverage and delivery vary. The WhatsApp option works nationwide. Not sure? Message ChatBack and they'll confirm.
Skip the portal. Renew on WhatsApp.
No registration, no queue — the renewed disc delivered to you.
