How long is the grace period for renewing a vehicle licence in South Africa?
You have 21 days after expiry before late charges apply. Beyond that, you owe three things in addition to the new annual fee: pro-rata arrears for the months the vehicle was unlicensed (annual fee × months ÷ 12), plus a penalty of one-tenth of the annual fee per month overdue (capped at 100%). Renewing on time avoids all of it.
What documents do I need to renew my vehicle licence?
Your South African ID (or passport and permit), proof of residence not older than three months, and your renewal notice or current licence disc.
Can I renew my licence if I never received my renewal notice in the post?
Yes. Download Form MVL1 (also known as ALV) from the forms library, complete it by hand, and submit it at a participating post office or DLTC together with your supporting documents.
How does ChatBack on WhatsApp work?
Send your vehicle's registration number, tare weight and licence expiry date on WhatsApp. ChatBack returns a quote and secure payment link. After payment, share your ID and proof of address. ChatBack submits the renewal and the new disc is delivered to you.
