Renewing a Car License

Motorists are required by law to re licence their vehicles every year.

You get a 21-day grace period if you have not renewed the expired motor vehicle licence. The grace period is calculated from the expiry date on your current licence disc and if the licence is not renewed by the end of the grace period, penalties will be charged. Penalties are calculated at 1/10th of the licencing fee for every month that the licence remains lapsed.

How To Renew Vehicle Licence

In order to renew your vehicles licence disc you will need to take the following to your nearest licencing department or post office:

Motor vehicle licence renewal notice (MVL2). If you do not have the renewal notice, or did not recieve it in the post, complete form ALV1 (Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle) which is downloadable below.
Appropriate licencing fees - generally cash only.


If you are an organization, you will need to bring the following:
- Organisation’s business certificate.
- ID of proxy.
- Letter of proxy.
- Motor vehicle licence renewal notice (MVL2).
If you do not have the renewal notice or did not recieve it in the post, complete form ALV1.
- Appropriate licencing fees - generally cash only.

NOTE: If your vehicle is used for public transport or is a heavy load motor vehicle, a certification of roadworthiness must be done, and if you are licencing a bus this needs to be done every six months as a bus roadworthy certification is only valid for six months.
